I have some new photos for you guys.
This is a protest that took place this week at the entrance to my campus. A bunch of public employees were not happy with the Queensland State Government about something.
This is a Saint Patrick's celebration that took place today, also on campus.
Another shot of the festivities.
In case you are wondering, Saint Patrick was the guy that, according to legend, banished all snakes from Ireland. Yes, there are no snakes native to Ireland, but the Irish would probably argue that they have something worse, the English.

Interestingly there are balloons at the protest. Something tells me that Australia is a really nice place to stay.
ReplyDeleteSame here. I wonder why Australia bothers with St. Patricks' though. Maybe an Irish community there?
ReplyDeleteA significant number of Australians have Irish ancestry. Some would have arrived on the convict ships and the rest came between the end of the colonial era and the post World War 2 period, during which the vast majority of immigrants were from the UK and Ireland.
ReplyDeleteDuring the 2006 census 9% of Aussies claimed Irish ancestry.
America is another country that celebrates St. Patrick's Day. Obviously because of a large number of Americans of Irish origin.
