The video I was talking about yesterday

Seriously, this woman makes me ashamed of being a woman. Never answer straight to the point, long winded. Can't even answer a simple question. Forget what she had said moments ago. I got so lost in the middle of the clip coz I have no idea where she is leading to. http://www.razor.tv/site/servlet/segment/main/news/61150.htm

  1. I can tell Mrs Foo is a very experienced speaker.

    1. She is building up confidence at the start and hence you might call it long windedness. I would say this is understandable since this is the first time she speaks to the public as a representative of the PAP. A lot of good public speakers employ this technique.

    2. Also notice the tact she employs to avoid questions which she does not want to answer.

    3. She quickly connect herself with the common folks speaking about her weaknesses, a brief history of herself etc which is required for her new role. People wants to know their candidates so that they know who they are voting for. I seldom hear MP talks so freely about themselves and their family in front of the media. I would say she gives a refresh, homely aspect to the PAP.

    4. More importantly she know what she is talking about and what not to say.

    5. She directs the questions which the reporters asks instead of the other way round. If she gives short answers for each of the questions asked by the reporters, sooner or later some awkward questions would pop up and be a stumbling block to her career. Instead she feeds the media material she has apparently prepared and feels is safe for them to ask.

I would say in the short interview, she has done a good job at selling herself and establishing base with the public.

If I am a woman, I would be proud if I have her skills and success both at work and in the family.

  2. Just want to add, her style also reminds me of my director...

If you cannot convince, confuse! Which is what she did at the beginning of her interview.

  3. Precisely why I don't like her style. She reminds me so much of an ex boss who is a woman and an ex supervisor who is also a woman. Now you know why I love my current office? Both boss and supervisor are men...straight to the point.

On another note, I think I need to learn that technique. Definitely not helpful in my job, but could be helpful in dealing with some people.

  4. Well actually handling PR matters you cannot be straight to the point most of the time. Imagine people looking for the MP for help and straight to the point he or she tells you "NO!" That would be kind of hard to digest for many regardless of whatever "solid" reasons there are that the MP is unable to help.

Not hard for us to understand that in her line of work, tact and building rapport with your listeners is a must.

  5. You will be surprised how useful this skill is in any job especially yours since you have to handle a lot of people (young or old).
