Fileserve Going No More

Hi guys,

our fileserve is expiring. So I would like to know if you guys wanna try out other available options? Somehow I think the dl speed for fileserve has significantly dropped over the past few months and I am barely hitting 200 KBps where else previously it was around 1MBps. We can try out a months or so to vet thru the service quality. Kindly let me know what other recommendations you have.

Currently I am checking out:

An Argument Against Intelligent Design

Or at least one by a benevolent, just Creator.

http://animal.discovery.com/videos/river-monsters-the-demon-fish.html

When Nature spawns fish that routinely attack crocodiles, I think its a message to stay the hell out of the water. Intelligent Design's underpinnings have an unstated message that everything was engineered for the benefit of Mankind... but there are and were animals that could squish us by accident. For example, Diprotodon is an extinct species of marsupial, essentially a two tonne wombat with proportionately sized koala claws. The Thylacoleo carnifex (yes, there actually is an animal named "carnifex") was a hundred kilo meat eater that ensured that no early human civilization settled Oz.

To put it succinctly Nature is badass, often terrifying and they didn't throw Christians to lions to watch Christians head butt the lions to death.

Your Ideal Job

For some of us, we'd give our right arm (or at least someone else's) to work on shows like Top Gear or maybe Walking with Dinosaurs. For me, its Mythbusters because as pseudo-scientific as they are, their experiments generally involve more overkill and contain 8000% more explosions than mine.

The Heart of the Swarm

The next installment of the Starcraft II franchise is apparently far along enough for Blizzard to post a trailer which does imply a 2012 release.

And now for something completely different:

Here is the link to the "Backstroke of the West" aka Star Wars episode III: Revenge of the Sith with the deliciously hilarious mistranslations that come from using machines rather than native English speakers to write out the subtitles.

The 50's Were a More Innocent Time

This toy from the 50s, the Austin Magic Pistol, works through a reaction of calcium carbide with water. This produces acetylene, you know that gas we use in welders? Not only is it available to children, its used as propellant to fire a projectile, presumably at other children....

Though We Know Not the Day or Hour, the Time Draws Near...

... For the culimination of Marvel Picture's most ambitious project to date. If any of the component movies tanked at the box office, there were good odds that this film would have been shelved but not only did they manage to fly past that hurdle, X-Men Origins showed that there was still strong interest in "superteam" movies after the previous X-Men and the Fantastic Four films did some damage to their credibility.

For comic nerds:

Got to admit that I am loving Robert Downey Jr's version of Iron Man. This Tony Stark is (somewhat) less of an asshole than his canon 616 counterpart while being more sarcastic and funny.

At least they got Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow to break up the boys' club. The Wasp was the only founding female member of the Avengers and if they had to put in one of the female Avengers, I am glad that they decided to use Black Widow. Ms Marvel would (visually) have too similar powers to Iron Man and Thor while Scarlet Witch's ability to screw probablity might not make for good cinema. Although granted Natasha is pretty much a mirror version of Steve Rogers; a female Soviet spy versus an all-American soldier boy.

Responsible Pregnancy

Call me heartless, but I seriously feel that people need to think about responsible pregnancy. Difficult first trimester and difficult third trimester can affect other people working around you, not just you. It is really irresponsible if you just take that time away to 'just rest'. You can always set aside 30 min per day of your leave to clear overdue work (and not leave it to someone else). If you've always been weak and you get weaker when you are pregnant, seek medical help. Covering for two pregnant women is no fun...it's not helping that people assume that i'm the most free since I'm single. Maybe I really should get married and get pregnant (and keep getting pregnant!)

p.s. once again, something that i can't post on fb.

Fileserve Problem

FYI for those that is using singtel.

I have been plagued by fileserve landing 1703 error for a good part of the year. It makes my computer unable to download properly. Initially I suspected it is due to me switching over to windows 7.

However it seems like not the case since people has been using it fine.

Only until recently did I googled fileserve landing 1703 error singtel did I realised the singtel proxy is blocking this.

So after setting the proxy manually and correctly, I am once again PIRATE of Singapore.

A Story From the Past Returns...

Many, many moons ago these arcane items known as "gamebooks" were popular with the young. They were a means by which you could enjoy roleplaying on the go without the need for human intercession long before thinking box mechanisms became capable of doing the same. Now a resurgence of old stalwarts is arising. Fighting Fantasy has new editions out along with new books. Lone Wolf has revised "Flight From the Dark" to suck less compared to its more illustrious descendants and new books continue the saga of the "Grand Master" who has become Lone Wolf's go-fer now that he's a Supreme Master and way too old for this shit. More importantly multimedia projects are bringing these IP into the new millenium. Fighting Fantasy got quite a bum deal in that respect; Talisman of Death was released as a video game that is basically the original book digitized into a format intelligible to things that have wires.

Lone Wolf on the other hand....

Snow White lived alone with seven men.
Jasmine was in a forbidden relationship with Aladdin.
Little Red Riding Hood didn't listen to her mother and went out.
Pinocchio was a liar.
Robin Hood was a thief.
Tarzan walked without clothes on.
Sleeping Beauty was kissed by a stranger and married him.
Cinderella lied and sneaked out at night to attend a party.

These are the stories our parents raised us with & then they complain our generation is messed up?

Something to share.

Hi all,
Just want to share something with everyone here. It's a poem entitled Children Learn What They Live by the late Dr Dorothy Law Nolte, lecturer in family life education. Perhaps it can explain some of the things we see everyday.

---------
Children Learn What They Live

If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn.
If children live with hostility, they learn to fight.
If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive.
If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves.
If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy.
If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy.
If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty.
If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence.
If children live with tolerance, they learn patience.
If children live with praise, they learn appreciation.
If children live with acceptance, they learn to love.
If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves.
If children live with recognition, they learn it is good to have a goal.
If children live with sharing, they learn generosity.
If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness.
If children live with fairness, they learn justice.
If children live with kindness and consideration, they learn respect.
If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and in those about them.
If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to live.

The Rally Survival Guide

After a brief journey to the "sacred" rally ground, I have decided to compile a mini Rally survival guide.

1. Bring a Chair (for those who cannot tahan standing for too long)
2. Bring Water
3. An umbrella (in case of rain and you are not at the stadium)
4. An open mind.

I am quite impressed and entertained by the passion and drama at the rally grounds. Its like watching a Getai performance but in different context. It hardly matters if the speakers are good or bad, qualified or not. Its exciting watching the crowd go wild.

The drama is coming to a close, catch it before it over :)

Your Vote is Secret.

Debunking the myth that voting is not secret.

A popular and unsubstantiated rumor is that votes can be tracked through their serial number. Why do ballot papers have serial numbers in the first place?

On the Worker's Party website we can find an FAQ with the following entry;

"Q: Why must the ballot papers have serial numbers?

A: This is a good way to guard against election fraud such as bringing counterfeit ballot papers into the polling station, vote impersonation or basing ballot papers which have been marked by others. We are not the only country in the world to have ballot papers numbered."

On the Elections Department website, they go into more detail on the purpose of serial numbers;

"The serial numbers on ballot papers enable strict accounting of all ballot papers issued and cast. That way, the number of papers found in the ballot box at the end of the election can be reconciled with the number of papers issued during the poll and the number of papers stocked before the poll began. This is a means to deal with the threat of ballot boxes being stuffed with false ballot papers.

Ballot papers have to be numbered to provide evidence if there is an allegation of impersonation, i.e. that a voter has cast his vote pretending to be someone else. This is done if the court orders so, by matching the suspicious ballot paper with the counterfoil, on which the voter's registration number is recorded. If proven, the vote can then be subtracted from the declared election results. Without the serial number on the ballot paper, it will be difficult to establish such an allegation, and to adjust the declared election results accordingly. "

"So, is ballot secrecy compromised by reason of having a serial number?

Theoretically, it is possible for anyone with access to the ballot papers to identify who cast a particular vote. The link between the ballot paper number and the electoral register through the counterfoil does facilitate tracing from a ballot paper to a voter's identity on the register. However, ballot papers can be examined only under strict conditions, and there are safeguards that make it extremely difficult to find out how any particular voter voted."

"The serial number on the ballot paper is to protect the integrity of the democratic process, and not to undermine the secrecy of the vote.

The ballot paper number is still a feature of UK parliamentary and local government elections."

Another common concern is; "What happens to my vote after I cast it?". On the Worker's Party website we find;

"Q: After I have cast my vote, what happens to it?

A: After the close of polls at 8 pm, the votes are sealed and moved to the counting centres where they will be counted by civil servants from different departments in the presence of the candidates and agents from both ruling party and opposition. Once counted, the votes, together with all the relevant records, the stubs of the ballot papers as well as unused ballot papers are sealed and transferred to the vault at the Supreme Court where they are kept for at least 6 months. The votes cannot be retrieved unless a court order is obtained on the ground of election fraud.

According to the Elections Department website, no court order has been issued to retrieve votes since Singapore conducted elections in 1948.

At the end of 6 months, the sealed votes and records will be transferred to an incineration plant for destruction. The whole procedure is witnessed by candidates/agents from all parties. The Workers’ Party has been present and has found the seals on the votes and records intact. The Workers’ Party is satisfied about voting secrecy."

Also on the same website is this helpful image;

According to the Elections Department;

"After the ballot papers are counted, all ballot papers and their counterfoils have to be sealed in the Supreme Court vault for 6 months, after which all the ballot papers and other election documents are destroyed. During those 6 months, these documents can only be retrieved by court order. The court will issue such an order only if it is satisfied that a vote has been fraudulently cast and the result of the election may be affected as a result. Our courts have issued no such order to date."

It is clear that voting is secret, and I will maintain this stance unless EVIDENCE is provided to the contrary. Whether you are a civil servant or on a university scholarship, you can vote for whomever it is you want, without fear.

One Hat

Three Hats for the Pilots in the sky,
Seven for the Sailors in their hulls of steel,
Nine for Unit Men doomed to die,
One for the sergeant-major on his parade square,
On the demolition range where the land-mines lie.
One Hat to have them fall-in, One Hat to hide them,
One Hat to gather them all and in the darkness confine them
On the demolition range where the land-mines lie.

Weird Al originally recorded this song but Lady Gaga declined to allow him to put it into his new album. Luckily she has since rescinded this prohibition and it'll probably not only get into the album but a professional music video. After all, wouldn't you want to watch one rather than just lyrics?

Not surprising why kids today misbehave

How do you expect kids to listen to their parents as Tarzan lives half naked, Cinderella comes back home at midnight, Pinocchio lies all the time Aladdin is the king of thieves, Batman drives at 320KM/h, Sleeping beauty is lazy and Snow white lives with 7 guys. We shouldn’t be surprised if kids misbehave at times! They get this from their own storybooks!

New Fileserve Acct

Hi all, I have subscribed to a new fileserve account. Enjoy!

Math Jokes...quite lame but enjoy.

1) There are only 10 types of people in the world — those who understand binary, and those who don't.

2)  e^x, sin(x) and cos(x) walk into a bar and ask for a drink. The barman says "I'm not serving you in here.  The function room is upstairs"

When they go to the function room , the party was going really well but sin x noticed that e^x had been sitting in the corner by himself for some time so he translated over and said "What's wrong, e^x ?". The Exponential looked up rather sadly and said "Well, I have tried to integrate but nothing happens; I'm just left by myself".

3) Shared by a male teacher who taught in an all boys school:
In a small, boys only group a while ago, we were going through Pythag. Previously, they could all find the hypotenuse, but kept on adding when they were trying to find one of the others. We talked about WHY, and the overall feeling was that they didn't like calling the sides a, b and c. So I said that they can call them anything they like, as long as they remember which is the longest. We discussed using j,k,l (l=longest) or f,g,h (h=hypotenuse).
They still weren't keen; so I told them that when I was at school I always called the hypotenuse m for mine, and then I could call the other two anything I wanted. "Why sir?" "because no matter whose the other two were, mine was always longest!". They've never got mixed up with them again.

What the Princess looks at when she looks up her laptop

In response to last week's poster at nex.

Princess needs to scream

For those who are always on MSN, you would notice that I haven't been around. It's not because I don't want to, but I can't :( I had problems logging either via pc, normal laptop, macbook, iphone, htc, etc. When I could finally login to hotmail, I got a page that said account blocked. Okay, fair enough...maybe there's a problem with my account and I was told to follow some steps to reset my account. Followed all the steps until I came to a page that said "You may continue to reset your account or leave the page." However, the hyperlink only appears for "leave the page" and "return to recovery page". Thinking that I have to return to recovery page to continue resetting the account, I clicked on it. Alas, it took me back to the first page that says my account has been blocked. (Scream 1)

Wayfarer then suggested I create a new account instead. Okay, that's what I've been trying to do since morning. Hotmail is seriously lagging, but I persevered until I got to a page that says I can't create a new account coz they've already reached the limit of new accounts for the day. (Scream 2)

I need MSN!!!!!!!!!! (Scream 3)

Next issue, I'm not sure if I've ever mentioned that I'm sending kids to an interschool math quiz in July. Part of the registration requirement is that I need to submit 3 questions for each categories. My students are taking part in 4 categories, that means I have to submit 12 questions (Scream 4), in which I must provide the answers and workings too! (Scream 5). It's not helping that they expect higher order thinking questions. And, the school needs to pay for registration for each category. I'll be happy not to send my students, but the boss always says " We need to show parents that we are making an effort to stretch our better students" (Scream 6)

That's another reason why I need MSN. My overseas math contacts are all on MSN, and since they are not on my regular contact list, I didn't bother copying my address book to another email account. Also, all the accounts and passwords of non-local math sites are in my hotmail inbox! (Scream 7)

Helpless and I have until 12pm to submit. This is on top of setting my own school's class test and exam papers.

SCREAM!!!

Dragon Age 2: A Review

Having completed Dragon Age II, time for a quick review. Overall its a very pretty game but I would have to say that its inferior to the original. Its certainly not a bad game, far from it, but you could see that the short development cycle really had the team scrambling. In a way Dragon Age Origins (DAO) was like a hand-crafted watch with every gear and screw lovingly tightened by a master while Dragon Age II (DA2) is a factory production model. Stylish, competent and attractive but standard issue lacks the craftsmanship that made the original great.

You could see it in all those recycled environments and the need to keep denying you re-entry into some dungeons since the dev team needed the entrances for another dungeon down the line, Some of the situations in the game felt rather contrived, quests like a certain rescue mission always have the same outcome regardless of what you did. Sure this was for an emotional gut punch to the player but it hardly gives you the idea that your actions actually matter, do they? That is also another factor in the game; in DAO you were the one in the driver's seat. From Ostagar to the Landsmeet, you could pretty much control whatever happened. The player's decisions always mattered but in DA2 it felt more like you were just being dragged along by the tide of history. The new conversation interface, which no longer displays any actual text of what your character is going to say, does not help in that regard.

Another criticism is that the game now employs cheap tactics, enemies spawn out of nowhere to attack you often surrounding your party in short order making crowd control abilities a must and tactical planning moot (tactical improvisation on the other hand...). You can really feel Bioware reaching for the mass market crowd by dumbing down some of the RPG elements. Now that you cannot even change your companion's armor, you find that about two-thirds of the armor you collect is pretty much vendor trash. Sure it cuts down on the organization needed to equip your party but it was at best a half-measure. I am already equipping up to two weapon slots and four accessory slots, I am pretty sure I can do the armor slots as well.

The story is decent but I felt that DAO's story was better with a sense of exploration in a whole new world that none of us have ever encountered before. Tightening the focus to just Kirkwall and its environs did make the narrative more focused as opposed to the wandering you had to put up with in DAO so I guess it evens out.

Where DA2 really pales in comparison to its elder sibling however is in the characters. Morrigan blew hot and cold, Oghren was hilarious, Alister was our Knight in Snarky Armour, Sten was a born Straight Man, Leiliana and Zevran both tried to carve into our minds that rogues were bisexual and Shale was quirky enough a companion to justify the DLC price. Even Wynne really felt like a world-weary mentor trying to keep you from blowing your own head off.

Varric and his Carpet of Virility +5 is great fun. Merril can be either hilarious or annoying depending on your tolerance for Country Hick Humor. Isabella is trying her best to be a flirty seductress but comes across as a little blatant; she does however get some great lines. Aveline is the new Straight Woman. Everyone else... well... What can I say but what is up with all the emo dudes? Fenris looks like he belongs in a JRPG game, Anders whines constantly, Sebestian is on his revenge kick; I know that female gamers are an untapped market but two gay options for the guys? Really? There is enough emo in the guys' side to make the women in Kirkwall look like the well-balanced side of the gender equation. Collectively they just are not as fun and interesting as the DAO crew. Come to think of it, Dragon Age: Awakening did not have such a strong cast either but had the excuse of being an expansion pack.

That is not to say that DA2 does not improve on some things. Classes are far better balanced this time around, some would say that it went a little too far in that mages are nearly useless as crowd control in higher difficulties where friendly-fire is enabled. Some of the quests are quirky enough to be endearing such as arranging a series of dates for a certain someone. Too bad they did not let us view a wedding cutscene. They even held the wedding in my estate and I do not even get to see it happen? Bah humbug. There is less junk to filter through than in DAO, they even explicitly mark vendor trash as "junk". Its graphics are naturally superior although some character models of returning characters simply look off but maybe that's just me. I mourn the loss of an isometric top-down view to the depths of my soul though. Yet another concession to time since such a feature is usually disabled in console releases.

Overall, a game not without its faults, DA2 would have been viewed far better if it did not have to be compared to DAO. Like the Mass Effect series, Bioware tried to make it more casual friendly but not all of their ideas were implemented well. Still its worth the purchase and some serious consideration for your time.

Now for some spoilery comments. Do not read further since this spoils some events in the game unless you want to be spoilered on end-game content.

Gone?

Good.

Duelling the Arishok as a Mage, and presumably an archer, is a pain in the ass. Such a battle should have been epic. Instead it was a Benny Hill routine as I ran in circles for half an hour sniping him whenever I could. Sure we got to whack Logain in DAO but he was not so tough that he could kill a mage or rogue in about three hits or less. Plus it lacked that personal feel of vendetta, Logain caused my king to die, my mentor to die and got an entire army slaughtered for his own political gain. The Arishok was just being stubborn. Sure I was saving Isabella's life but again it was a matter of the Arishok not compromising on the ways of the Qun. Personally there was no bad blood between Hawke and the Arishok prior to the invasion and there was similarly little player investment in the victory. After being provoked so often, could you really blame the Arishok for deciding to burn everything to the ground? Well, actually yes I can but it was not like he did not sit on his ass for half a decade before losing his patience.

My biggest disappointment was that so little of what I did during DAO actually carried over to DA2. Some dialogue, some cameos, that's it. Its like someone at Bioware just threw up their hands and decided to toss the majority of our decisions in DAO away. Now both the Warden Commander and the Champion of Kirkwall are missing. Great, sequel hooks abound. However if only they had bothered to give us a satisfying ending to DA2 besides some of Varric's narration, that would have been great. Not even a "where are they now" or "what are your plans for the future" like we got in DAO.

Universal Studio

It's good! Very high recommendations from me.

Anyway most of the stuff (esp Battlestar Galactica) are opened. So feel free to check it out! I think its better than Dream World Brisbane.

Will pass the mad penguin the pics and vidz. Get it from him after I am away.

New File Sonic Acct

Hi All, let's try out filesonic as well so as toget a better comparison of what is available in the market. It's $11.75 to share among the 4 of us.

Who's involved:
Rich
Megamorph
Mad Penguin
Cat

There is no "Kill" like "Overkill"

Seriously, its a hollow point round with sufficient calibre to vaporise small mammals. Why is this legal to purchase and own?

For people who routinely hunt elephants and want a commensurate amount of firepower to the above example, there is the Punt Gun....

For those of you who are experiencing cognitive dissonance due to vague childhood memories, that's the voice of Tony the Tiger (they'rrrrreee GREAT!) narrating the use of a firearm that blows out a pound of shot per pull of the trigger.

Why do we have taxi?

Had a horrible wait for cab just now. seems like all the cabs are only in service at certain time of the day. No wonder car owner ship in sg is climbing. Lets face it, public transport is still more reliable than cabs even in time of need or emergencies. still there are more cabs on the road now than ever. Just not where you want them to be or when you want them to be. I think it is a retirement job the gov planned for us just to keep us from idling and continue working.

ill go for a month hitus of taxi rides. After saying so, I think my bad luck will simply bite me back for saying this.

I post here coz if i do this in FB, my inbox will be flooded.

I wonder how men take it, but as a woman, I can't take it!!!

A colleague is experiencing her first pregnancy. Granted, we can understand if she's anxious or if she's worried that she can't handle a lot of stress. But to use her pregnancy as an excuse to (1) not schedule remedials on Friday afternoon for her subject so that she can have an early start of her weekend rest for 'mother and baby', (2) cut the queue for food/toilet/printer/photocopying machine, (3) request to have her classes split into two AND to take the better half because she's afraid she might get depressed if she has to keep repeating the same thing over and over again to a weaker class... gosh, it's really too much. To make it worse, if she submits work late or if she's late for a meeting, she never fails to mention "must understand, i'm pregnant." Or, after finalising distribution of duties for the term, she ends in by saying "I'm pregnant, not sure if I can continue to contribute further."

Seriously!!!! She's not the first one in the staffroom to get pregnant! If she's so worried, take no pay leave since her hubby brings in lots of income anyway.

Not sure who's the admin. But I logged in earlier using my other account. No need to add lavieenrose into the group.

By the way, anyone else counting down? I'm actually counting down to end of term. Now waiting anxiously for an email from school to cancel lessons from 1pm onwards coz of O level results.

My favourite scene from Expendables

I feel this is the best scene from the movie.

The Price of Not Paying Service Charges to Samsung

Looks like Samsung is diversifying into the F&B industry. Else they would not have gotten the 'pay me service charge or Iwill not serve you properly mentality into their heads.

I am in a very pissed mood.

Long story short:
1. 2.00pm Wait to be serve at customer service
2. 2.30pm Left phone with them. Stated collection time: 5.00 pm
3. 5.00pm Reached center. Got feedback by customer officer have to wait for them to finish 60 customers in queue before I can collect my phone.
4. 5.15pm WTF. Send them a negative customer feedback email using the free internet provided by them at the service center.
5. 5.30pm WTF still waiting. Approach customer officer number 2 to try my luck. She passed her will saving throw.
6. 5.45pm WTF still waiting. Still plenty of customer in the center.
7. 6.00pm Went to approach the customer officer who serve me earlier. Thank goodness he responded and brought out my phone.
8. 6.05pm Out of Samsung Service Center. (Note: it only take 5 minutes to check everything is okay)

Summary of my email to Samsung.
'I would like to feedback to you on the horrid service I am experiencing now at the plaza singapura service center. I believe the problem here is that Samsung SC has failed to deliver as promise. I have passed the phone to your side for an upgrade for 2.5 hours and the collection slip clearly states the time of collection to be 5.00 pm. And when i am here your customer service officer states that have to wait for them to clear the other 60 customer in the queue before they can attend to me who obviously only need 5 min of their time to collect my phone. Afterall the collection time is 5 pm as per stated. I would estimate that will need another 1-2 hours more before they can finish all the customers.

Thank you for your precious time and hope that you understand that my time is just as important to me as it is to you.

Plus side:
It is fun giving them such feedback thru their website using the free internet provided by them. Afterall they made me wait so long.
